How to Care for Your Cosy Em Knitwear
Beautiful knitwear deserves a little care. Looking after your Cosy Em knits correctly will help them keep their shape, softness and colour so you can enjoy wearing them season after season.
How to Wash Your Knitwear
The care label on Cosy Em knitwear recommends:
Cool hand wash. Do not spin or tumble dry.
Hand washing is the gentlest option and our recommended method for caring for your Cosy Em knitwear.
Many of our knits can also be washed carefully in a washing machine on a cool wool or delicate cycle, using a detergent specifically designed for wool. If you choose to machine wash your knitwear, use a low-temperature, gentle programme and avoid a standard or vigorous spin cycle.
For particularly delicate, fluffy or embellished knits, we recommend hand washing.
Always check the individual garment care label before washing.
How to Hand Wash Knitwear
Fill a clean basin with cool water and add a small amount of wool detergent.
Gently immerse your knitwear and allow it to soak briefly. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or wringing the fabric, as this can stretch the fibres and affect the shape of your knit.
Rinse gently in cool water until the detergent has been removed.
How to Dry Knitwear
Do not tumble dry your Cosy Em knitwear.
After washing, gently press out excess water without wringing or twisting. You can place the garment between clean towels and gently press to absorb additional moisture.
Reshape the knit while damp and dry it flat, away from direct heat and sunlight.
Avoid hanging wet knitwear, as the weight of the water can stretch the garment and alter its shape.
Caring for Mohair & Merino Wool Knitwear
Many Cosy Em designs are made using soft blends containing mohair and merino wool.
Mohair is loved for its beautifully soft, fluffy appearance, while merino wool provides natural warmth and comfort. These fibres benefit from gentle washing and do not need to be washed after every wear.
Often, simply airing your knitwear between wears is enough to keep it feeling fresh.
Pilling & Natural Fibres
A small amount of pilling can occur with wool and mohair knitwear, particularly in areas where the fabric experiences friction. This is a natural characteristic of many soft fibres and does not mean there is anything wrong with your garment.
If pilling occurs, remove it gently with a suitable knitwear comb or fabric shaver, taking extra care with fluffy or delicate knits.
Caring for Lurex & Loose Knits
Please take a little extra care when wearing lurex and looser-knit styles, as the delicate yarn can occasionally catch on jewellery, zips or other sharp objects.
If you do catch or pull a thread, don’t panic and don’t cut it. In many cases, you can gently encourage the yarn back into the knit.
Start by holding the fabric on either side of the snag and gently stretching the knit in different directions around the pulled thread. Work slowly and carefully. This helps redistribute the yarn along the row of knitting and should gradually make the pulled loop smaller.
If a small loop remains, use a small crochet hook or large-eyed needle to carefully pull the loose thread through to the inside of the garment. Insert the hook or needle from the reverse of the knit, catch the loop and gently draw it through to the back.
The snag should then be much less visible from the front.
Never cut a pulled thread, as this can cause the knit to unravel or create a hole.
How to Store Your Knitwear
We recommend folding rather than hanging your Cosy Em knitwear. Hanging knitted garments for long periods can cause them to stretch, particularly around the shoulders.
Make sure your knitwear is clean and completely dry before storing it for longer periods.
Store folded in a cool, dry place and consider using a suitable moth deterrent when storing wool knitwear between seasons.
